Basic Christianity: The Chosen

In this series on basic Christianity, I am trying to get back to the very basics of being a Christian. I have been detoured at times by God's Spirit to write about some things which are truly basic but not in the vein of basic Christianity as we know it.

The last article in this series was titled, "Basic Christianity: The Called". This of course is the first foundational step toward being a true Christian. The next step is being CHOSEN by God.

Jesus told His disciples this.
John 15:16 "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you."

We are told in the Book of John that NOT JUST ANYONE can come to Jesus except the Father DRAW him.

John 6:44 "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day."

Here we see that God the Father alone is the one who CHOOSES whom to call to salvation AT THIS TIME through Jesus Christ. Scripture tells us that God is not working with everyone right now, but only those He has selected from the dregs of this society.

1 Cor. 1:26 - 28 " For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
But God hath chosen the foolish things (people) of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:"

Yes God is choosing those He decides are not wise, not mighty, not noble. He is choosing those who are foolish, weak and base to give to them His Holy Spirit to enable them to be saved from death and to help Him start The Kingdom of God on this earth!

This knowledge should keep those who are being chosen now in a very humble attitude, by realizing who and what they are exactly and why God wants to use them at this time as a part of His plan of salvation for all mankind in the future!

If you would like to go back and review the first article, "Basic Christianity: The Called", just click on the title I have provided here for you.

We will now continue with The Chosen.

When Christ returns to this earth as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, there will be with Him 144,000 new spirit beings which are referred to in Revelation 17:14 as those who are, called, chosen and faithful. These are they who are in the FIRST resurrection.

There is another scripture that makes a startling statement.
Mat. 22:14 "For many are called, but few are chosen."

If many are called but only a few are chosen, then how does one become "chosen?"

In the beginning God set before mankind a choice that has to be made. That choice is shown in:

Deut. 30:19 "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:"

That choice is one that every human being who ever lives will have to make at one time or another. Many people believe that this time is the ONLY time of salvation, that everyone must make that decision right NOW. However, that is a false assumption and not based upon scripture. Look for another article later to explain this.

When God calls a person, that person must THEN make a decision as to whether or not he will follow Jesus. If the decision is yes, that person must begin to OBEY God's commandments, statutes, ordinances and laws which God has placed into our Bible.

That obedience will spiritually lead that person to want baptism.

One thing I want to mention here is that baptism WITHOUT OBEDIENCE is just a 'dunking' in water! REAL baptism is done to show God that we desire to obey and be one of His Children!! It is a picture of being BURIED WITH CHRIST and then 'resurrected' to walk in newness of life. It is showing God that we WILL, to the best of our abilities, KEEP His Commandments, Statutes and Laws.

Rom. 6:4 "Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life."

What a picture! Not only does this show God that we want to be obedient to Him, it also shows Him that we realize that Jesus was sacrificed for our sins, that He was buried, AND that we KNOW He now walks "in newness of life!" Yes, that life as a spirit being with God. He is our advocate (our go-between) between us and God, providing His shed blood as our righteous covering so that we can go DIRECTLY to the Father with our petitions (prayers)!

How magnificent!!

Once we have done this, God sees that we are repentant, have turned from our previous way of life and have begun, as best we can, to keep God's Way of Life.

He then CHOOSES us as one of His Children, and when we come up out of that watery grave, He gives us His Holy Spirit to lead us in that Way of Life which He desires for us!

Once we have been CHOSEN by God as His Child we must then be FAITHFUL UNTIL THE END. God Himself has made a commitment to us that we will be saved from death at the resurrection. The only problem with that is whether or not we will continue in the Way of Life God has chosen for us and in which He now leads us.

Yes, God has made up His mind and as far as He is concerned we will be in that resurretion. However, we MUST remain faithful to that way of life as long as we live so that we can keep OUR PART of the bargain (the covenant) we have made with Him. The only variable in this covenant is whether or not we will KEEP OUR PART OF IT!!

Will YOU do your part? Will you make that covenant with God and begin to Live that Way of Life He has decreed? You can, you know!!

Please stay with us and watch for the article "Basic Christianity: The Faithful" which, hopefully, will help you be more faithful toward God and lead you in The Way to that resurrection to spirit life!
