Who/What Is The School Master?

There is a scripture in Genesis 26 that says: "Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws." (verse 5)

It is stating the reason God will keep the promises He made to Abraham. He says He will do what He promised because Abraham heeded what He said, OBEYED Him, kept the CHARGE He decreed, and also kept His COMMANDMENTS, His STATUTES, and His LAWS.

What in the world is God talking about?

In a number of places and in conversations I have had with various individuals, I have stated that just keeping the Ten Commandments is NOT all that is required of us IF we claim to love God and Jesus. Of course, keeping the Commandments is a major part of obeying God since everything hinges upon and is BASED UPON them.

I will get into the covenants that God made with Abraham that ended in the resulting statement above, in a later article. What I want to do now is dissect verse five and try to see what God is saying.

When God spoke to Abraham, he LISTENED and HEEDED what God said. God CHARGED Abraham to do certain things and Abraham kept that charge. Abraham also kept God's COMMANDMENTS, His STATUTES, and His LAWS. What are these commandments that Abraham kept? They were the Ten Commandments! We know they were in effect before Mt. Sinai because people could commit SIN.

(All emphasis is by the Editor.)

Sin is: "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4)

We know that Abraham almost caused King Abimelech to SIN when He told the King that Sarah was his sister. Notice the scriptures below:

Gen 20:2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah.
Gen 20:9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great SIN? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

Yes, the SIN of ADULTERY was in force during Abraham's life. It had been instituted in the Garden of Eden when God "commanded the man" (Gen. 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, ...) There are many other scriptures that show The Commandments were in effect before Mt. Sinai, but I won't get into those here.

That takes care of COMMANDMENTS

How about STATUTES?

The major statutes that God commands to be kept are the Holy Days. There are SEVEN major Holy Days that are associated with particular seasons that must be observed. Those are quoted in Lev. 23. I will not quote the whole chapter, but just those scriptures that are most pertinent to this article to keep it shorter.

Lev. 23:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.
3 Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation;ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.

The above is referring to the SEVENTH DAY SABBATH! The weekly Sabbath is a part of the Feasts of the Lord!

Then He commands the keeping of the OTHER Holy Days!

4 These are the feasts of the LORD, even holy convocations (commanded assemblies), which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even is the LORD’S passover.
6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread unto the LORD: seven days ye must eat unleavened bread.

Notice, they are God's Feasts, not the feast of the Jews!

Then we have Pentecost (It means 'count fifty')

15 And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath (the weekly Sabbath), from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete:
16 Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat (meal) offering unto the LORD.

That offering was to be made on the FIFTIETH DAY, the day after the seventh weekly Sabbath.

I won't quote more here, but throughout this chapter it tells us that all the Feasts of the LORD are Holy Convocations, that is Holy commanded assemblies! All God's people were COMMANDED to observe them and they were commanded to do it FOREVER! See this verse:

Lev. 23:31 Ye shall do no manner of work: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

Yes, ALL God's Sabbaths are STATUTES that are to be KEPT FOREVER. That word 'forever' in the Hebrew language means ---(Strong's Concordance-5769-owlam) long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, world "

Yes, it truly does mean forever and they are HOLY COMMANDED ASSEMBLIES for the people of God!!

The Book of The Law

There are other kinds of statutes that God decreed by the mouth and hand of Moses. These were written into a book and placed in a storage spot IN THE SIDE OF THE ARK of the Testimony (Covenant) (See vs 26 below). This BOOK OF THE LAW was read each Sabbath by the priests at the commanded assemblies.

De 30:10 If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
De 31:26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
Jos 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

This BOOK OF THE LAW was written by Moses and Joshua and is called "The Law of Moses". These are the laws that God gave to the Israelites through Moses at Mt. Sinai.

Luke 2:22 “And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord;
23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.

This is referring back to Lev. 12:6 and is detailed in the Law of Moses (also called The Law of the Lord).

Notice Deut. 5:1 “And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
3 The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
4 The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,
5(I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,

After this, Moses re-iterates the Ten Commandments. Then in verse 23 Moses begins talking about how the Israelites reacted when God SPOKE. It scared them to death and they wanted Moses to be an intermediary between them and God.

Notice these verses: verse 23 ¶ And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
24 And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.
25 Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.
26 For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
27 Go thou near (Moses), and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.
28 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the LORD said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.
29 O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!
30 Go say to them, Get you into your tents again.
31 But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
32 Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
33 Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.

Thus Moses became an intermediary between God and Israel in bringing all the commandments, statutes and Laws to Israel. However, the statutes and laws were NOT ADDED to the Ten Commandments. They were in a category all their own.

The Law of Moses and the Ten Commandments are NOT THE SAME!

God, Himself, wrote the Ten Commandments with His own finger upon two tables of stone that He cut out of the mountain while Moses was on the mountain with Him. Please NOTE this scripture!

De 5:22 “These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me. “

Yes, God ADDED NO MORE laws to the Ten Commandments because the Ten Commandments are the CORE of ALL laws. Each of the other commandments, statutes, laws and ordinances were BASED UPON the Ten Commandments. Everything else only included the Ten Commandments because THAT WAS THE AUTHORITY upon which all the other laws were based.

Do you understand? THE TEN COMMANDMENTS STAND ALONE and all other laws relate back to the Ten.

When Moses came down from the mountain, the children of Israel had 'forced' Aaron to create a golden calf for them to worship. This made Moses so angry that he threw down the stone tablets and broke them.

Later God told Moses to make two more tables of stone and bring them up to Him on the mountain where He, again, wrote the Ten Commandments upon them. These are the two tables of stone that are in the Ark along with Aaron's rod that budded and a container of Manna.

The Book of the Law, as I said, was placed in the side of the Ark where those who read from it could have easy access.

The School Master! - A part of God's Ordinances

Quite a long time after God brought the Children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage, something else happened. The Children of Israel just would not quit sinning and God had to place a BURDEN (a curse - daily sacrifices) upon them to continually remind them that SIN KILLS! (Rom. 6:23)

Hebrews 10:1-4 and verse 11 shows these were daily sacrifices!!

1 ¶ For the law (of sacrifice) having a shadow (leading up to, being an image or type) of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

(Yes, the Law of Sacrifice – which was ADDED to the ordinances - was a type, an image, a shadow, pointing to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus.)

11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:

Please NOTE: Until this time He had NOT
commanded them concerning sacrifices.

Jer 7:22 For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:

There is a scripture in Gal.3 verse 19 that makes a statement that can be confusing IF a person has believed someone who told them that "the law is done away."

Ga 3:19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

People who DON'T WANT TO and WILL NOT obey God, use this scripture and a few others to try to claim the doing away of the law. One of those is :

Col 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way (doesn't say it was done away), nailing it to his cross;

Hmmm.....handwriting of ordinances. Remember the last word I emphasized in Gal. 3:19? Yes, the word "ordained".
Whatever law Gal. 3:19 was talking about, it was an ordinance. That law is the "handwriting of ordinances" spoken about in Col. 2:14.

Let's examine these scriptures closely along with some others and see if we can come to understand what "law" God was talking about and why it was nailed "to his cross."

To begin we need to look at another scripture to get a foundation for this.

Rom. 4:15 Because the law worketh wrath (it has a penalty- Rom. 6:23): for where no law is, there is no transgression.

That is pretty plain isn't it? Where no law is, there is NO TRANSGRESSION! Yet, Gal. 3:19 says that a law was added BECAUSE OF TRANSGRESSIONS, didn't it? Then THERE MUST HAVE ALREADY BEEN A LAW TO TRANSGRESS!!

Yes, there was! It was the Ten Commandments!

I John 3:4 is very plain about what sin is:

"....for sin is the transgression of the law. "

Then WHAT LAW was Gal. 3:19 talking about? It was one that was contained in ordinances. It was AGAINST THEM, it was an expensive burden and curse to them.

Ga 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law (the penalty of sacrifices demanded by the law, i.e. death), being made a curse (a sacrifice) for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Yes, sacrifice shows in no uncertain terms that the curse we receive as a result of sin, is DEATH.

Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

They had to bring THEIR BEST animals (or whatever the Law called for) to be sacrificed to God because of their transgression of the Ten Commandments!

This law was ADDED to THE MOSIAC ORDINANCES (the book of the law), as a HEAVY burden, because of their sins. It was the LAW OF SACRIFICE.

Please remember Jer. 7:22 and Heb. 10:1-5 in relation to this.

Jer. 7:22 “For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:”
Heb. 10:1 “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.
3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.
4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

This was the "schoolmaster" that God placed on and over the people until Jesus could come to become a ONE TIME sacrifice for sin for those who were given the faith to believe in that sacrifice!

Ga 3:24 Wherefore the law (of sacrifices contained in ordinances) was our schoolmaster to bring us unto (or up to the time of) Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Ga 3:25 But after that faith is come (because of our accepting Jesus' sacrifice), we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

Yes, the Law of Sacrifice was a schoolmaster pointing us to (taking us up to) the sacrifice that Jesus would make for us.

But who is this US I am talking about? Those whom God calls through Jesus (John 6:44), who accept that call, are repentant, baptised, and then receive The Holy Spirit, that's who!! (Acts 2:38)

Those people, who are true Christians, are the ones who had that "handwriting contained in ordinances" nailed to Jesus' "cross."

Who and what was nailed to the cross?

Only Jesus as our Sacrifice!! He is our sacrifice once for all time! Yes that sacrifice (that schoolmaster) was "nailed to the cross" and we who have FAITH IN THAT SACRIFICE no longer have to make those kind of sacrifices.

Heb. 10: 12 “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;”

Then was THAT law "done away"?

No, even that law is still "on the books" for those who haven't been called, chosen, and faithful.

It seems to me (and this is my opinion) the reason there are no animal sacrifices being done at this time is because there is NO LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD and NO TEMPLE. Only those priests were allowed to accept and make sacrifice for the people, and since sacrifices will again be made in the future, it would seem to me that a new Levitical Priesthood would be raised up by God and a temple built (or set up, as the tent in the wilderness was set up).

Zec 14:21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.

This verse is in context with the time after the RETURN of Jesus as KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS. At that time everyone will KEEP God's Commandments, Statutes, and Laws, and those who are not of the FAITH will keep those things as well as the sacrificial ordinances, until they learn, "under that schoolmaster", that they MUST obey God! Otherwise they will receive plagues until they DO obey all those things.

Let's read the scriptures in Zech. 14, ok?

16 ¶ And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.
17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain
18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the LORD will smite the heathen (unbelievers) that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
20 In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the LORD’S house shall be like the bowls before the altar.
21 Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.

What a wonderful time it will be when EVERYONE is obeying God and is TRULY AT PEACE.

Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost (Spirit), whom God hath given to them that obey him.

Yes. In order to receive eternal life, people MUST have the Holy Spirit residing within them when Christ returns!

Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (resurrect, make alive, make immortal) your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
17 ¶ And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
I Cor. 15:42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

In spite of what most religious people believe,
humans do not NOW have immortality!
