Just WHAT Do You Mean ... "In The Image of God?"

In the book of Genesis chapter 1 and verse 26-27 we are told that MAN was created in the IMAGE of God. We are also told in those same verses that MAN was created MALE and FEMALE.

How are WE created in the image of God? Is God male and female? Does God have genetic makeup whereby HE has X and Y chromosomes which is what it takes in humans to make males and females?

I don't want to get into a study of biology here but just to show some of the most basic structure of the human being.

The purpose of this article is to try to explain how man-kind is created in the image of God, and in order to do that we must know quite a bit of who and what God IS.

We are told in --

John 4:24 "God is a Spirit: ... "

God exists as a spirit being and as such is ever-living and immortal.

1 Tim. 6:15-16 "Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen."

We find here that God ONLY has IMMORTALITY. Immortality automatically includes 'ever-living' since that is a part of immortality. However, we MUST realize that only God and the resurrected Jesus have immortality at this time.

Who IS God?

When Moses was commanded to go into Egypt and free all the Israelites who were in captivity, Moses wanted to know what he should tell them, and who had sent him.

Ex 3:13-14 "And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

I AM means the eternal, ever-living one. THAT IS WHO GOD IS!

Now we know WHAT God is, and WHO God is.

Does a spirit being have 'gender'?

In the book of John, Jesus is praying to the Father and asking this.

John 17:17-26 "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

Here Jesus was praying that His disciples at that time as well as His disciples at a later time (verse 34) might be ONE with Him and The Father. He was, of course, asking The Father to make them ONE IN SPIRIT with the two of them!

At the First Resurrection, those who have been begotten by God's Holy Spirit in this life will be changed into a Spirit Being where they will then be LIKE God and the resurrected Jesus! They will be ONE in spirit essence and in mind!

Now notice back in Genesis.

Gen. 1:26-27 "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."

God created man-kind as physical beings. Therefore, a physical being is 'in the image' of God.

At the first resurrection those of man-kind who are resurrected will be 'after His likeness.'

These two verses are immediate, and also prophetic at the same time, talking about what they were doing at that time, and what they would do in the future, don't you see?

Are God the Father, and the resurrected Son, Jesus, males?

Because scripture refers to God as 'Father' and to Jesus as 'Son', some people believe that they are MALE.

Of course, Jesus was male when he was a human being on earth. However, God and Jesus NOW are Spirit Beings, an therefore have NO GENDER.

How do I know this?

Because when those human beings in the first resurrection become spirit beings they will no longer have gender!

They will be AS the angels in heaven ... (They won't BE angels, but will be AS the angels.)

Mt 22:30 "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven."
Mr 12:25 "For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven."

Gender is specific to a human being! But Why?

For the same reason that man-kind was made male and female ... so they could "be fruitful, and multiply!"

They were made male and female so they could have a part in creating other human beings who would later be taken into God's Kingdom and, as spirit beings, made ONE with God and the resurrected Jesus!!!

It has been said that God is creating a FAMILY!

Physically speaking, this is true!

We MUST realize, however, that analogies are used all through scripture to try to EXPLAIN to human beings about the SPIRIT world!

The human world and the spirit world are NOT the same, and ALL analogy breaks down in comparison to what it is trying to explain when it comes to the spirit world.

Then should the 'image' (man-kind) reflect exactly what it represents?

Of course not! It is only an image. It is like a SHADOW cast by a physical human being. It isn't the human but it gives a representation of the shape and size of the person.

That is how man-kind relates to God. Man-kind doesn't LOOK exactly like God but gives us an idea of how He looks.

From looking at man-kind we can know that God has a head, face, mouth, body, legs, arms, hands, feet, toes, eyes, ears, and hair.

God doesn't have sexual organs because those were created specifically for human beings to use in our physical lives, for waste elimination, and procreation.

God has NO need for those organs!

He can CREATE without them and He does not need them for waste elimination because He needs no food!!

What Does God and Jesus look like NOW?

Rev. 1:12-18 "And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death."

Of course, that tells us what Jesus looks like now, BUT what does God the Father look like NOW?

John 14:9 "Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?"

Yes, when Jesus was a human being, He was an IMAGE of God the Father.

He is NOW LIKE God the Father so we can see by the scriptures in Rev. 1 how Jesus AND God the Father look NOW!

Just remember, the physical is merely an IMAGE of the spiritual.

The Apostle Paul tells us this.

1 Cor. 13:12 "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known."

To close this article, may I admonish you to NOT try to make the SPIRITUAL resemble the PHYSICAL. It is just the other way around!

It's all about the SPIRIT, you know!!
