Do You Pray IN JESUS' NAME?

When most professing Christians pray, they usually end their prayer with the phrase "in Jesus' name." When and if YOU pray, do you end your prayer with those words? If so, do you know what those words mean?

I began pondering this phrase because of a newsletter that I received from Evangelist Ronald Dart. The newsletter was thought-provoking and stimulating because it brought to mind the fact that most people don't REALLY stop to think about the words they use, even in every-day conversations, much less in prayer.

There is a statement in the book of John that, I'm sure, has puzzled many people who have prayed for something "in Jesus' name."

Joh 16:23 "And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
Joh 16:24 "Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full."

Those are pretty powerful words! Ask in Jesus' name and you will receive whatsoever you ask!

DO YOU ASK? DO YOU RECEIVE? How many times have you asked using that phrase and NOT received what you ask? I would venture to say, MANY TIMES!

Then why? Is there a missing ingredient that you haven't heard about that naturally and spiritually goes with that phrase?

Yes, there IS!!

In the rest of this article I will do the best I can to explain exactly how one can ask something "in Jesus' Name."

Just what is a name, anyway? In Strong's Exhaustive Concordance it is said:

onoma oní-om-ah

from a presumed derivative of the base of 1097 (cf 3685); TDNT-5:242,694; n n

AV-name 193, named 28, called 4, surname + 2007 2, named + 2564 1, not tr 1; 229

1) name: univ. of proper names
2) the name is used for everything which the name covers, everything the thought or feeling of which is aroused in the mind by mentioning, hearing, remembering, the name, i.e. for oneís rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds etc.
3) persons reckoned up by name
4) the cause or reason named: on this account, because he suffers as a Christian, for this reason

Yes, the name is used for everything which the name covers! Rank, authority, interests, pleasure, command, excellences, deeds, etc.

We have been taught, in the past, that what we are doing is praying using Jesus' authority. What authority does Jesus have with God? He has the authority God has given Him over everything except God. Therefore, by His authority he gives us the PRIVILEGE to ask God directly because we have accepted His sacrifice and because we are His brethren who suffer with Him. We don't have ANY authority! It is a privilege, granted by Jesus, to be able to go directly to the throne of God Himself with our petitions (prayers).

Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

This gives us a tremendous privilege to go directly to our Father in Heaven and ask for those things we want and need.

However, as I stated above, everything we ask is not always granted, is it? No, it isn't! Therefore, we must find out why those prayers aren't answered since Jesus said we could ask anything "in His Name" and it would be granted.

Let's look at another scripture that deals directly with that subject.

James 4:1 ∂ From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

That is pretty plain, isn't it? There is a way to "ask amiss" because of our wrong motives!

We're getting there but it is still not clear yet what everything means, is it?

We must determine to whom  Jesus is speaking when He made that statement.

Let's go back to John 16 and find out.

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16 ∂ A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

The pronoun "he", used in these scriptures, is another complete story which is partially covered in our article about "The Trinity" which is on the web site, and it has also been covered partially in our printed newsletter.

The above verses plainly show that Jesus is talking to His close disciples. Reading the complete chapter tells us they were with Him just before He was hung on the cross (stake) and killed.

The pronoun "he" (in the neuter gender) and the words "the Spirit of Truth" shows that God's Holy Spirit is totally involved in the answer to the questions we have posed above, since the context of the chapter also includes the subject of our question.

Ok then, what more is required of us before we can receive those things for which we ask?

Good question!!

In a great number of the articles presented in Seven Times we have shown that in order to receive God's Holy Spirit we must OBEY God! We have quoted the scripture so many times that it feels almost redundant to again quote it, but I will anyway!

Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost (Spirit), whom God hath given to them that obey him.

God WILL NOT give His Holy Spirit to someone who will not obey Him because God knows that would cause Him to make someone immortal, at the resurrection, who has the same nature as Satan! God will not do that!!

He is not going to have any rebellious children in His Family (Kingdom)!!

In I Sam. 15:23 God makes a plain statement about this.

"For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king."

Rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft and witchcraft is punishable by death!!

Ex. 22:18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.

God is making certain He will not give eternal and immortal life to one who continues to sin!!

As has been stated in a lot of our articles, when one receives God's Holy Spirit, one has received a down-payment on eternal life (Eph. 1:14). If we manage to hold on to that down-payment and not commit the unpardonable sin, then we WILL be resurrected to eternal life at Jesus' return and also be given immortality!!

I Cor. 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

And in Romans.

Romans 2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:

Immortality is something we NOW SEEK! It is not something we  NOW have!

God knew when He created the angels they had the freedom to rebel against Him. He also knew He had not given them immortality, for only God has immortality. That is in I Tim. 6:16 if you care to look it up!

We have determined so far that Jesus was talking to His disciples before He suffered and died.
We have determined that He told them they could ask anything "in His Name" and God would do it.
We have determined that they would have to have the Holy Spirit within them to be able to receive whatsoever they asked.
We have determined that only those who obey God can receive the Holy Spirit.
We have also determined we must obey God to be able to ask "in Jesus' Name".

How then are we to ask in Jesus' name?

First we must be IN Jesus' Name!!! We must be obedient to God and Jesus. We must be keeping His Commandments, Statutes, and Laws just as Abraham was keeping them (Gen 26:5).

Remember Jesus said, " If ye love me, keep my commandments." (John 14:15) We have explained in another article, "Was Jesus God", why Jesus called them HIS commandments! Maybe you should check out ALL the articles on the web site and in the newsletter. They DO bear re-reading!!!

There are some other things we need to do. Two are listed in Acts.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Spirit).

The word "repent" carries much more weight than most of professing Christianity gives it. That word means to QUIT what you are doing, certainly, but it also means TO TURN AROUND AND GO THE OTHER WAY!!!! It means to quit sinning and begin to LIVE RIGHTEOUSLY. We have explained living righteously in other articles in Seven Times and quoted the scripture which tells us what righteousness really is! I will quote it again here to save you the trouble of looking it up.

Psalms 119:172 ∂ My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness.

So we need to repent of sin (1 John 3:4), and begin keeping ALL God's commandments. All of those include God's Holy Days, as delineated in Lev. 23. I won't take up space here to quote all of them, but you should note that the weekly (7th day) Sabbath is included and is the first of those which God commands to be kept. You should also note that these are the Feasts of God, and NOT of the Jews!! And I hope you will notice they are to be kept FOREVER.!

Ok, one must repent and then be baptized, but notice what we are baptized INTO!! We are baptized INTO THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST!!!!!

Our repentance and obedience to God allows us to be baptized into Jesus' Name and we can then, as it is said in Acts 5:32, be given God's Holy Spirit.

Once we are baptized into Jesus' Name and receive God's Holy Spirit, we ARE the SONS OF GOD!! When we are baptized into Jesus' Name, we are a part of His Body as described in 1 Corinthians 12.

1 Cor. 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular.

Once we have made it this far, we are described in the following scriptures:

John 17:6 ∂ I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
11 ∂ And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. (the evil one. -editor-)
16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
17 ∂ Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
20 ∂ Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:

When we have done all these things, when we are IN the Body of Christ (we have become one with Him), we become joint-heirs with Jesus of ALL things!!!!

Rom. 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Perhaps you should really ponder ALL the things to which Jesus was heir!!

Once we ARE in Jesus' Name, we can then do as is stated at the beginning of this article and "ask anything" in Jesus' Name and God will do it, because we are asking according to God's Word and according to His Will!!

I John 5:14 ∂ And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

We won't then be consuming what we ask upon our lust for we will be using the MIND OF GOD (His Holy Spirit) when we ask.

Do you see now how much more the phrase "in Jesus' Name" means than what we have been taught? When you end your prayer "in Jesus' Name", you are saying to God that you ARE IN Jesus' Name and can receive the answer to your prayer because you KNOW it is God's Will.

You can come boldly to the Throne of God (Heb. 4:16) and ask anything "in Jesus' Name" and KNOW you will receive it!!

Why?

Because Jesus said so, that's why!

Does that leave you asking any more questions?
Such as, "What about people who don't keep the seventh day Sabbath and the Holy Days? What about those who keep Sunday? Those who observe Holidays?
What about those who believe in God but don't think the Ten Commandments are in effect today?
What about those who believe it is all right to worship God anyway they want to worship Him?

I'm very sad to say this, but they just aren't "in Jesus' Name" if they aren't obedient to God's Word!

Listen! Whether a person obeys God or not, all the things God says will happen, WILL STILL HAPPEN!! And that in spite of human beliefs.

God says we must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. It must be in HIS Spirit and His Truth, not what we "think" is spirit and truth.

John 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

God sets forth in His Word (the Bible) what He demands as worship and declares in no uncertain terms what He will do to those who try to worship Him in any other way!

Check out these scriptures:

Deut. 12:28 Observe and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God.
29 When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou goest to possess them, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their land;
30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
32 What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

Rev. 22:6 ∂ And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done.
7 Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.
8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
11 He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs (pagan idolators), and sorcerers (witches, wizards and such), and whoremongers (those who search and seek after illicit sex), and murderers, and idolaters (those who place anything before God), and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie (that includes "white" lies).
16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.
18 For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:
19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
20 ∂ He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all (All those who are keeping the words of that book, The Holy Bible). Amen.

Does God care how people worship Him? Those scriptures say that He does!

To those who are observing Holidays which were based upon beliefs founded by those of ungodly faith such as Christmas, Hallowe'en, Valentines Day, Easter and such, I say REPENT and BELIEVE the Gospel of Truth as found in YOUR bible!!

If you have been baptized into any faith other than that of the Holy Bible, then you should get baptized into Jesus' Name!! You will need to search out those who are TRULY baptizing into Jesus' Name and have them baptize you before you will receive God's Holy Spirit! That is the only way your prayers will ever be consistently answered!

This is serious, folks!! There is only one way to Salvation and that is IN and THRU Jesus Christ!!
It is a narrow path and is not being trod by very many today!

Mat. 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Will you repent and begin to walk the straight and narrow path that leads to the Kingdom of God?

I truly hope and pray that you will. Should you desire personal consultation about proper baptism or any other thing you have read in our newsletter, I am available via e-mail or the address printed in the newsletter.

Your servant,

Ken
