WAS JESUS REALLY GOD?

Was Jesus really God? Many believe he was and many believe he was just a good man, a prophet, or some such.

Many people who profess to be Christian (followers of Christ) say Jesus was fully man and fully God. They say it is a great mystery and that we are not supposed to really understand it, and yet the scriptures continually tell us there are some who have "ears to hear."

This, of course, is speaking of "spiritual ears" since these are spiritual things being talked about.

What about it? Was Jesus God? Let's examine some scriptures and see if we can come to a conclusion on this matter, ok?

Matthew 1:23 "Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us."

Hmmmm...God with us. What in the world does that mean?

We must go to the book of John to see that.

John 1:10 "He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.
11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not."

Who is this talking about?

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 The same was in the beginning with God."

Yes but how do we know this has to do with Jesus?

John 1:14 "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth."

Now we're getting somewhere! John is talking about The Word of God who was WITH God and WAS God and who BECAME Jesus. He became FLESH and lived among human beings. (Specifically-the Jews) He was of Jewish ancestry since His mother, Mary, was of the tribe of Judah. The rest of His lineage, of course, comes directly from God.

However, even inspired scripture gives Jesus' physical lineage from Joseph (since he was Jesus' step-father and Jesus had no other earthly father). You can check that out in Mat.1:1-16.

(Yes, I know people hate to run lineage...it's so dry and unexciting. However, it can be VERY important to our understanding of scripture.)

Jesus was sired by God through the Holy Spirit. What happened here?

By His POWER (The Holy Spirit), God caused the egg in Mary's womb to become fertilized. The vacant holes in the DNA chain were filled with the genes that God wanted to be there in order for Mary to give birth to a child exactly as God wanted!
There was NO sperm involved, though some "scholars" have declared it was. Mary was STILL A VIRGIN and remained so until she and Joseph later had children together.

Whoops! There goes the Catholic belief that Mary was a continual virgin until she was "assumed bodily into heaven." (Papal encyclical of 1952).

Here I will insert some of MY inspired understanding (read that as educated speculation) about how this created a NEW human being sired by God and born of the virgin Mary.

The filling of the DNA holes with genes created by God gave the physical design for this new baby. This determined his genetic makeup of hair color, eye color, stature and size of the body, and physical strength, etc.

The Spirit of God then joined with Mary's human spirit to create a NEW SPIRIT which was exclusively that of the NEW child. This determined how he would think and respond to his new life.

Did this union of the spirits make Jesus FULLY God? No.

This was a human spirit able to THINK like God and to learn much faster than other human beings because of GOD'S MIND (Spirit) that was in him.

Philippians 2:5 "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:"

His thinking from his early years was very close to or perhaps even LIKE the way God thinks. We know that at the age of 12 he was sitting in the temple TEACHING those 'GREAT MEN' who were themselves teachers.

Luke 2:42 "And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them (he was answering questions), and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers."

We have seen here that Jesus was a very SPECIAL child. The angel Gabriel told Joseph and Mary that his name was to be called Jesus (which means YHWH is salvation).

Jesus, Joshua, and Justus are derivations of the same name, by-the-way.

We can see, then, that even the name Jesus means salvation. No wonder there is no salvation by any other name!

Did Jesus have super-natural (Godly) powers?

John 5:19 "Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, THE SON CAN DO NOTHING OF HIMSELF, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise."

Why was this? Because Jesus was totally a human being with only human strength and abilities. He had GIVEN UP all the Godly power, glory, and divinity, to become a human being so that he could DIE for our sins (not just be separated from God).

WITHOUT DEATH AND THE SHEDDING OF BLOOD THERE IS NO FORGIVENESS OF OUR SINS. Anyone may learn this bible truth by studying the sacrificial laws in the Old Testament.

To prove that God used His power at Jesus' request, look at the scriptures about Jesus' friend Lazarus, brother of Martha.

John 11:39 "Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days.
40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? (Not the glory of the Son.-- Editor.)

Notice the next two verses.

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.
42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Jesus KNEW that God ALWAYS HEARD HIM WHEN HE PRAYED FOR GOD TO DO SOMETHING FOR HIM!

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Even that coming forth, evidently, was through God's power since Lazarus was wrapped up like a mummy. But notice...when he came forth he was STILL wrapped in the grave clothes, unlike Jesus' resurrection to Spirit and His grave clothes were still laying where He had been placed.

Wow! Powerful stuff!! Jesus was only a human being. He had God's name since He was the Son of God and a member of the Family of God.

Also notice something else in:

Acts 10:38 "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; FOR GOD WAS WITH HIM."

When did this anointing happen?

Mat. 3:16 "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil."

The anointing happened just before He was led into the wilderness to be tested and tried by Satan himself!

Ac 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

This was also before He did ANY of the miracles recorded in the scriptures!

Did the pharisees believe that Jesus claimed to BE God?

John 10:32 "Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?
33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and BECAUSE THAT THOU, BEING A MAN, MAKEST THYSELF GOD.
34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
35 If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
36 Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; BECAUSE I SAID, I AM THE SON OF GOD?
37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
38 But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, THAT THE FATHER IS IN ME, AND I IN HIM.
39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand,

The Pharisees KNEW that if Jesus called Himself the Son of God, that Jesus claimed to be a part of the God Family...a part of the GodHead!

Just as an aside...if we are called the sons of God, are we not to be a part of the Family of God?

So we see that Jesus had been The Word of God (who WAS God and WITH God). The Word of God gave up everything to become a human so He could DIE. God, of course, is immortal and CANNOT DIE. Many people say this death wasn't really death, but that Jesus went to HELL and preached to the fallen angels. WELL, EITHER JESUS WAS DEAD TOTALLY OR WE HAVE NO SAVIOR!! As I said before, and shown by the sacrifices, if there is no death, there is no forgiveness of sin and therefore no salvation!!! If the "soul" is immortal, and if Jesus' "soul" was immortal then there could be NO DEATH. A human body is NOT PAYMENT for sins!!! It MUST be the TOTAL BEING!!!

Was Jesus God?

The scriptures say so! Do YOU believe? It is plain from the Old Testament throughout the New Testament that Jesus WAS God as a human being. (Read also the article "The Human God")

Yep. Jesus was God...before...during...and after!

And is still God, acting as our High Priest. (A High Priest presents sacrifices before God to be accepted, so Jesus still presents HIS sacrifice to God for our sins.)
