Why Did God Plant The Tree of Knowledge?

Question submitted on: Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at 06:53:56

Greetings. Thank you for submitting your question and for allowing us to be of service to you.

Question: I was just curious. Why did God plant the Tree of Knowledge in the first place? What was its purpose?

Answer: First, let me get the terminology straight... it is the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. I think you know that, but there may be others who don't. It is better to be on the same page when answering questions.

This is a question which has been bandied about for a long time. The reason it is discussed so much is that people just don't understand God and what He is doing with the human race.

We need to go back past the beginning of physical things to a time many millions of years earlier. God (The Ancient One and The Word) began to plan to have a family. A group of beings who would be in the family because they truly wanted to be there, not because they were afraid, but because it was their heart's desire!

In order to do this, God laid out a plan and began to work that plan. They created angels to help them and to be servants to these coming family members. (Heb. 1:14)

One of those angels was named Lucifer (it means = " light-bearer", shining one, morning star). God created him an Archangel (superangel) and appointed him over, it is believed, one third of the angels. (Rev. 12:4 -- Stars here represent angels).

God also gave Him another job. After the earth was created, Lucifer was placed on the earth to prepare it for the habitation of mankind which God would create later.

On the earth God had also created a place called Eden where He had planted a garden. This garden was to be the home of the first human beings. In the middle of it He had planted TWO special trees. One was the Tree of Life, the other the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil.

Once mankind was created, Lucifer was to be the "light-bearer" ('light' being the Truth of God) to all the human creation. (God names things and beings to show what they are). He was to assist God in preparing human kind to become members of the God-Family.

We don't know how long Lucifer was on the earth preparing it for human habitation (Isa. 45:18), but it seems somewhere along the line he decided he didn't like the idea of preparing someone else to become members of the God Family when he, himself, wanted to be in the family. He wanted to be LIKE God and sit in a throne beside God and Jesus, with him being OVER the Stars (angels) of God, and the congregation (church) of God.

Isa. 14:
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north (God's Home, Heaven):
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds (of this earth); I will be like the most High.

This, in essence, would block all mankind from becoming a part of God's Family, since Lucifer would have been IN AUTHORITY over them!

He couldn't understand why God would want those weak, physical, beings to be children, when he was powerful, beautiful, and talented...not to even mention that HE was a SPIRIT being!

He probably began to 'worry' this around in his mind and talk about it to the angels who were on the earth working with him. It is sure that he came to RESENT the position he was in and determined to do something about it. (Again, Isa. 14:13)

He talked his angels into joining with him to go to God's Throne and FORCE God to allow him to sit in a throne beside The Ancient One and The Word, to become the THIRD member of the God Head and to be LIKE God!! (This is probably the basis for the idea and teaching of the Trinity that so many churches embrace!)

The problem was that God had prepared THAT THRONE for His Children who would be born into His Family at a resurrection to Spirit Life. (Rev. 5:10) Those resurrected to Spirit life in the First Resurrection will inherit the same things Jesus inherited and will be truly Sons of God!

Rom. 8:
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Lucifer and his angels were beaten in the battle, and they were cast back to earth (Luke 10:18) and imprisoned here, being "chained" to the earth to await their judgment (2 Pet.2:4; Jude 1:6).

God changed Lucifer's name to reflect what he had become, the Adversary, or SATAN.

Strong's Exhaustive Concordance reference:
Greek - 4567 satanav Satanas sat-an-as’
of Aramaic origin corresponding to 4566 (with the definite affix);
1) adversary (one who opposes another in purpose or act), the name given to
1a) the prince of evil spirits, the inveterate adversary of God and Christ.

Satan was still allowed to reign over the earth and be "the God of this earth" (2 Cor. 4:4) until one would come who would depose him. (Ps 93:1-2; Lam. 5:19; Mat. 19:28 and 25:31; and especially Luke 1:32)

God began this deposition process by creating the FIRST human being. (Gen. 1:26-27; 2:7) The word 'man' in verse 7 is translated from the Hebrew word ADAM and therefore this first man was named ADAM.

God commanded the man saying:
Gen. 2:16 "... Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

I'm certain in my own mind this wasn't all God commanded Adam to do but it is enough for your question.

God decided it wasn't good for ADAM to be alone, so He made EVE (Heb. -mother of all living) (Gen. 2:18). God then JOINED them into ONE unit through MARRIAGE (Gen. 2:21-24). The two of them were endowed with the ability to CREATE other human beings (Gen. 1:28) through what we know as a sexual process called impregnation. Not only did this create more potential children for God, it allowed humanity to share in the creation process.

Then "along came John, big bad John"...er, I mean along came Satan to try to throw a "monkey wrench" into God's work.

He asked Eve,
Gen. 3:
1 "Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?"

Eve corrected him quickly and stated,

"... We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die." (Gen. 3:2-3)

Satan 'beguiled' Eve, spiritually seducing her, to eat of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. He told her she would be as God, knowing good and evil. She also gave some to Adam AND HE ATE!

It was discovered by God and He banished them from the Garden to make their own way on the land. (Gen. 3:15-19)

But, what about that Tree of Knowledge of Good an Evil?

God knew and acknowledged Satan's rule over the earth. He knew Satan would do his best to deceive mankind into rebelling against God and had planned for that time.

In order that Satan not be able to accuse God of being "unfair" (have you heard that expression from anyone you know?), God knew he would have to give mankind a choice of obeying Him, or Satan. This is expressed in Deuteronomy 30:19.

De 30:19 "I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:"

The fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil represented the 'way of Satan' and DEATH; and the fruit of the Tree of Life represented the 'way of God and ETERNAL LIFE.'

It was planted there to test and try mankind as to whether or not they would obey God.

It seems almost all of mankind has decided to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. That way of life was taught to Cain by his mother, Eve. Cain then taught all his decendants that way of life. That way of life has been passed down to our modern society which is almost wholly walking in "the way of Cain!"

This "way of Cain" was a life of rebellion against God. What do we see today? God has been kicked out of families, schools, courts and our way of life. This society is now beginning to REAP what they have sown.

God delineated that harvest in Deuteronomy 28:15-46.

Too many people, preachers, and priests today teach a God that is capricious, devious, giving bad things to His children should they pray for something amiss.

God is NOT that way!! God would rather give the Holy Spirit to His children than WE would want to give food to our children!

Let me say that again, GOD IS NOT CAPRICIOUS. He is the ultimate, the epitome of TRUE GOOD!

They are also teaching a way of life that has as it's basic premise, "Do your own thing", or as some say it, "If it feels good, do it!"

They are teaching a LAWLESS WAY OF LIFE, claiming Christ 'DID AWAY WITH THE LAW" at the cross.

They are wrong, of course. God stated that he gives His Holy Spirit to those who obey Him. (Acts 5:32)

The Ten Commandments are just as binding today as they were when God first instituted them!

I felt I needed to give you some background about God before I gave you the answer to your question. I hope you will take it and study your Bible about all this.

And here it is: God planted the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden because He knew Satan would show up preaching against Him, and He would be accused by Adam and Eve, as well as Satan, of being unfair because He had not allowed them a choice in their own lives.

The purpose then was to test Adam and Eve to see whether or not they would obey Him, or Satan. His purpose was to see whether they would accept what they had been taught by God and obey Him unquestioningly. God, after all, should know what is best for those He has created, don't you think?

Adam and Eve failed the test and were cursed to have to get their livelyhood out of an earth filled with briars, thorns, nettles and other inhospitable things. And to have to live with the constant barrage of evil ideas and thoughts from Satan the Devil.

Mankind is STILL failing that test!! Most believe the Law of God has been "done away" and all they have to do now is "just believe." No obedience is necessary, they say, because Jesus obeyed God for them all and took upon himself their penalty of disobedience, which is death.

Satan has DECEIVED the whole world (Rev. 19:12). I'm afraid that includes most of the churches of this world too.

It behooves us to get into God's Holy Word and internalize His Word. When we know His Word and "know that we know", Satan can't deceive us, because we don't look to ANY MAN for the truth, but DIRECTLY TO GOD. That is where ALL TRUTH truly is.

Thank you for allowing me to serve you. I hope this hasn't been so long that you lost interest before reaching here. Our privilege is to serve you in any way we can.
