Just What IS The Church?

"Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish." (Eph. 5:25-28)

Even as Christ loved The Church! Just what IS this church that Christ loved so much as to give Himself for it?

Almost everyone who would consider this question will tell you that the church is where you go to worship God. All those buildings with spires on top, standing on street corners, sitting on hills, or standing in valleys, are considered by most, especially those who profess Christianity, as churches.

In the book of Matthew, chapter 16 verse 8, we read this:

"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Was He talking about building a building where the disciples could come to worship God? It would not seem so from the words He used.
